EPPO code

A five-letter code that identifies plants and pests unambiguously across borders.

Issued by EPPO, the European plant protection organisation. The grapevine is VITVI, downy mildew is PLASVI, powdery mildew is UNCINE.

The purpose is the same as with an authorisation number: a code that cannot be misread. “Mildew” can mean two completely different diseases; PLASVI can only mean one.

Related terms

Downy mildew The vine disease that needs wetness, warmth and time all at once. Powdery mildew The vine disease that likes it warm and moderately humid and wants no leaf wetness at all.
