Leaf wall area
The actual target area of a vineyard block, worked out from row width and canopy height rather than from ground area.
Two blocks of one hectare of ground can carry completely different amounts of leaf: 1.80 m between rows at 1.30 m canopy height gives a very different target area from 2.20 m at 0.90 m.
Because the product goes onto the leaves and not onto the ground, application rates in winegrowing are increasingly expressed per leaf wall area — LWA for short. The arithmetic is simple, but it is a figure you have to record properly once per block.
Work from ground area and you under-dose narrow blocks and over-dose wide ones.
