BBCH stage

A two-digit number describing how far a plant has developed — for the vine, from winter bud to leaf fall.

The BBCH scale turns “shortly before flowering” into a number. For the vine, roughly: 09 bud break, 15 fifth leaf unfolded, 65 full flowering, 77 berries touching, 81 beginning of ripening, 89 ready to pick.

The value is comparability. An authorisation that permits an application “up to BBCH 81” says more than any description of the weather — and a model that works in stages knows whether today is about downy mildew or about botrytis.
