Cellar
Lot number
The marking by which one bottled lot can be identified beyond doubt.
It is on every bottle, usually preceded by an L. It is required by the German lot marking regulation, and its purpose is the recall: if something comes to light, that exact lot has to be within reach — and no other.
The lot number is the bridge between the label and the cellar book. It only helps if it resolves backwards to a bottling and forwards to a customer.

A defined quantity of wine that is treated and tracked as one unit.
Bottling
The move from vessel to bottle — the point at which a batch becomes articles with stock.
Traceability
The duty to be able to show, for any product, one step back and one step forward.
